Mozambique Ministry

Our Saviour’s has partnered with Vida Humana, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mozambique, and ELCA Global Mission to help with hunger, education, and healthcare initiatives in Mozambique. The three major targets of this important ministry are healthcare, hunger and education.

The history of Our Saviour’s Mozambique Mission dates back more than 12 years, following the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mozambique’s founding of a school for students whose families were refugees from Zimbabwe. Because Zimbabwean students spoke English and Mozambique schools conducted classes in Portuguese, a language barrier prevented refugee students from being able to attend regular schools in their new home.

The Aka Power School for Zimbabwean refugees in Chimoio addressed that urgent need. While space for the school was provided by the local Lutheran church, the school receives no government funding—not for rent, for supplies or for teacher salaries. Contributions from OSLC are a critical part of filling this gap.

Every Mozambique Mission pie purchased and every ticket bought for favorite annual events such as the Sweetheart Dance and the Food Safari & Drum Experience helps provide vital support for children and families in need in Mozambique. Proceeds from these fundraisers help fund the purchase of e’Pap nutrition packets, school supplies and more.

Aka Power School (the name means “the power to create through words”) has more than 350 students enrolled in preschool through 9th grade. Students are taught in both English and Portuguese; many teachers work on a volunteer or semi-volunteer basis.

On July 28, 2023, nine individuals from Our Saviour's left to travel to Chimoio, Mozambique, to visit the local Lutheran church, Vida Humana mission, and the school for Zimbabwean refugees. During their time in Chimoio, the group helped distribute e-pap nutritional packets, joined activists in visiting and praying with HIV and AIDS patients, collaborated with teachers and students, and shopped for and helped prepare a Sunday community meal. Also, thanks to your generosity, *9* suitcases filled to the brim with school supplies & more were delivered to students in Chimoio! Thank you for your enthusiastic support of Mozambique Ministry’s school-supply drive and pie sale—pies alone brought in $1,500 for the purchase of textbooks!

Monetary donations can be directed to the Mozambique Ministry throughout the year.

The healthcare, hunger, and education initiatives of

vida humana

Healthcare Initiative (partnership started in 2009)

  • Over 25 volunteer advocates provide in-home healthcare and medication for illness, including malaria, cholera, tuberculosis, and AIDS/HIV. These advocates note patients with no family to care for them so they can receive care. Advocates also offer emotional and spiritual support to all patients. What started as a closet in the local Lutheran Church is now a free-standing building with water. This model has been successfully replicated in other Mozambique communities.

Hunger Initiative (partnership started in 2012)

  • Starvation and hunger in Mozambique are due to famine and poor farmland. Hunger needs must be addressed as many of the medications cannot be taken on an empty stomach. The need for infant formula is great since HIV/AIDS is passed on in breast milk. The Hunger Initiative provides people with e’Pap, a pre-cooked porridge powder with absorbable micro-nutrients. The cost for e’Pap is small, however, shipping, government taxes, and tariffs are a large expense.

Education Initiative (Power School established in 2011)

  • Education is highly valued in Mozambique. The school offers Pre-K through 12th grade in two shifts because of the number of students. Certified teachers make up the all-volunteer staff. The school’s curriculum is Zimbabwe’s; the second-best curriculum in Africa. Students are currently lacking the basic supplies for learning, textbooks, and resources (books and access for research).
